G. PATRICK MURPHY


Judge Murphy served in Vietnam as a rocket man in Kilo Company, 3rd Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division from 12/1/66 to 12/27/67.  Pat was a Lance Corporal.  K 3/1 was involved in heavy combat for the entire year. His citations include: The National Defense Service Medal, Viet Nam Service Medal, Viet Nam Campaign Medal, Presidential Unit Citation, Good Conduct Medal, and Rifle Marksmanship Badge.

Born in 1948 in Carbondale, Illinois he received a B.S. from Southern Illinois in 1974 and a J.D. from Southern Illinois University in 1978.  He was in private practice in Marion, Illinois from 1978 to 1998.

On July 31, 1997 he was nominated by President Bill Clinton to a seat on the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Illinois.  He was confirmed on April 2, 1998 and served as chief judge from 2000 to 2007.
